About Us

Sacramento Lowrider Commission Preserving Culture, Building Community, Driving Change

The Sacramento Lowrider Commission (SLC) is a dedicated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to celebrating and preserving lowrider culture, family, art, and community. Established in 2022, our mission is to honor the rich history, present and future of lowriding "Art on Wheels" while elevating our artistic contributions and empowering diverse communities through cultural advocacy.

We believe lowriding is more than cars, it is a living expression of diversity, inclusion, and community pride that bridges generations, cultures, and social divides.

A Legacy of Advocacy & Historic Achievements

Our leadership team includes passionate lowrider advocates with decades of experience dating back to the 1970s. We have made history, breaking barriers and driving change:

  • First in the Nation – In May 2022, we successfully led efforts to repeal city and county “No Cruising” ordinances in Sacramento, setting a precedent for other communities throughout the state.
  • Statewide Advocacy – We played a key role in legislative efforts, including:

    • ACR 176 – Proud sponsor, recognizing lowriding as an important cultural tradition.

    • AB 436 – Groundbreaking state legislation SLC authored and helped pass with the California Lowrider Alliance, lowrider community, and legislative supporters.

  • Founding the California Lowrider Alliance – A coalition of 18 cities working together to protect and promote lowrider culture statewide.

  • Miller Regional Park Recognition – Spearheaded the renaming of a street in Miller Regional Park to “Lowrider Lane,” cementing Sacramento's legacy as a hub for lowriding.

  • CaLOWfornia Love: The Lowrider Culture Exhibit – In July 2025, we made history again by curating the largest lowrider cultural exhibition ever held at the California State Fair. Over 151,259 visitors experienced this 17-day showcase of cars, bikes, art, music, archives, and community storytelling, proving the profound cultural and economic impact of lowriding in California and beyond.

  • Cruisers & Careers Job Fair – Launched in 2025, this workforce initiative merges car culture with career pathways. By hosting job fairs alongside cruise nights and cultural events, we connect youth and community members, including those from underserved and underrepresented groups, with employers, unions, colleges, and training programs, advancing equity in access to opportunity.

Deep Community Engagement

Lowrider culture thrives through community involvement. Every year, we "The Lowrider Community" actively hold and support over 80–100 events, including:

  • Givebacks, educational workshops, and cultural celebrations, drawing attendees from Greater Sacramento, across the state, and beyond.
  • 1,500+ volunteer hours dedicated annually, engaging people of all ages, races, genders, and backgrounds.
  • Inclusive participation across diverse communities, ensuring representation in leadership, art, performance, and storytelling.
  • Annual presence in cultural, civic, and social justice events, promoting unity across ethnic and cultural lines.

Positive Economic Impact

Together the Sacramento Lowrider Commission and "The Lowrider Community" contributes significantly to our local and state economy by:

  • Boosting Tourism – Our cultural events attract thousands of visitors, benefiting local businesses, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Supporting Small Businesses – Vendors, artisans, and food entrepreneurs, many of them minority and women-owned, gain visibility and sales at our events.
  • Job Creation – Through partnerships and educational programs, we create opportunities in the automotive, arts, and cultural sectors.
  • Youth Workforce Development – By engaging young people in STEAM, automotive innovation, and initiatives like the Cruisers & Careers Job Fair, we prepare them for careers in engineering, sustainability, mechanics, and technology while advancing equity in workforce access.

Expanding Lowriding into STEAM & Innovation

We are committed to merging lowrider culture with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education.

Projects Include:

  • Electric Lowrider High School Project – Converting classic lowriders into electric-powered vehicles while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
  • Key Partnerships – With SAVA Charter School, SMUD, Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District, Ohm Electric Cars, and the California Automobile Museum.

Through these collaborations, youth from diverse backgrounds gain skills in sustainability, innovation, and cultural preservation.
